What Is Negative Marking in NDA Exam?
The NDA exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), follows a penalty system where every wrong answer results in a deduction of marks.
In Mathematics, each correct answer carries 2.5 marks, but 0.83 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer.
In General Ability Test (GAT), each correct answer earns 4 marks, and 1.33 marks are deducted for each wrong attempt.
Negative marking is not just a penalty; it’s a trap that pulls down even the best-prepared candidates. That’s why accurate attempt and smart elimination strategies are vital.
Master the Exam Pattern First
Understanding the paper pattern is the first step toward avoiding negative marking. The NDA written exam has two papers:
Mathematics (300 Marks)
General Ability Test (600 Marks)
Each paper is objective type and carries negative marking. To minimize risk:
Avoid random guessing.
Attempt only the questions you're confident about.
Use intelligent elimination for MCQs.
